Wolakota Center

The Wolakota Center was the first phase of the Reconciliation Place project. Tribal elders say that the word Wolakota perhaps best describes the overall spirit of the Reconciliation Place. The word means reconciliation, or understanding each other in a good and peaceful way.

Wolakota Center at NightThe Wolakota Center is a free standing, concrete column supported structure which is essentially the Lobby Area of the future completed building complex. It provides a sheltered gathering area complete with stage and display walls, a comfort station with restroom facilities, an outdoor festival area, an interpretive area with a Native Planting Circle, a half circle of seven lodge-size tipis honoring Oceti Sakowin, the Seven Council Fires, and a Native Prairie Interpretive Area. The Wolakota Center also features a 52 foot high, curved metal roof of the future common entry, driveways, parking lots, pole lights, lighted signage, and on-site utilities. The design and construction for this portion of the project are complete.
