Location
The historic Fort Pierre location of the Wakpa Sica Reconciliation Place is uniquely suitable for several reasons.
First, as the map shows, it is centrally located to service all eleven tribes of the Sioux Nation named in the legislation.
Second, it is immediately adjacent to the Fort Pierre Chouteau site, a fur trading center where the Sioux tribes and fur traders first conducted cross-cultural commerce.
Finally, it was on this site, where the Wakpa Sica (Bad River) meets the Missouri River, that Black Buffalo's Teton Sioux Brule Band first encountered representatives of the United States Government — Lewis and Clark.
