This is how the landscape looked on groundbreaking day, July 10, 2002, almost 200 years after the Lewis & Clark encounter. Notice that the river has moved approximately 1/2 mile to the east, away from the plain behind the tree line and is no longer visible.
Fort Pierre Chouteau is now an historic landmark, and the top of the tent, which was set on the Wakpa Sica site for the Groundbreaking ceremony, is clearly visible.
