Chouteau - 1844

In this painting by Karl Bodmer (1844) you can clearly see the way the Missouri River at Fort Pierre Chouteau looked just 40 years after the Teton Sioux (Lakota) encounter with Lewis and Clark in 1804.

Notice how the tipis are arranged around the entrance to the fort. This was architect Dennis Sun Rhodes' inspiration for the design of the Wakpa Sica Reconciliation Place facility.
